Getting your suit tailored may seem like an unattainable luxury and even a waste of time and money for most. However, alterations will make your suit fit correctly providing comfort, movement, and a flawless finish. Buying a suit in your size range isn’t good enough. How many times have you found yourself dissatisfied with your suit jacket being too tight on the shoulders and long at the sleeves? Or your suit trousers being in between sizes? Often, it’s not the suit that’s the problem but the fit.

When not to get a suit tailored

 i) The first thing you want to do is check you are buying the right size. It’s a waste of money if the sizes are too big or too small. Your tailor can only do so much. Plus, the more alterations mean more money. Suitexpert.com have a great illustration of how to determine your measurements.

ii) I started working in London at the age of 17. I already resented the fact that I had to spend my hard-earned wages on cheap suits for my office job, so the thought of getting a suit tailored never even crossed my mind… and nor should it have at the time. Everyone’s situation is different. Young adults that are new to the workplace, that are still growing and/or have little disposable income, then don’t put pressure on yourself to get a hold of a tailored suit.

iii) Nothing is worth going into debt for. If you do not have the money to pay for it right now, do not get your suit tailored. I’d go as far as saying not to spend money on luxuries until you’re out of debt and have a 3–6-month emergency fund saved.

iv) If your weight fluctuates from season to season, or you’re on a weight-loss (or gain) journey, its probably best to hold off until you’re at a comfortable weight. Use the idea of getting a suit tailored as added motivation.

1. Boost in confidence.

Your clothing and appearance affect the way you think. If you look good, you feel good. You want a suit that has you feeling your best and a tailored suit does just that. You want to be wearing a suit that is correctly fitted, you know looks good and isn’t too tight or loose in certain areas. So rid yourself of buyer’s remorse and boost your confidence by getting your suit tailored.

This precision of your measurements and tailoring creates a perfect fit which is key to showing off your body in the most flattering way, and everyone who is looking for a suit to power dress themselves deserve a suit with a perfect fit.

2. Presentation

I’m not here to argue that looks are equally as important as personality. But whether you like it or not, how you present yourself matters. Especially when it comes to first impressions and professional environments. The way you present yourself impacts the way others react and respond to you. Your appearance is the one personal characteristic that is immediately obvious and accessible to others. You can’t hide it. Your appearance makes a strong statement about your personality, values, attitudes, interests, knowledge, abilities, roles, and goals.

3. A great investment.

Providing the quality of the suit is good, this is a piece that could last you for decades and possibly even handed down. Sure, you may need a few minor alterations and fixings along the way, but you won’t need to replace your suit every couple of years. The initial investment pays off in the long run.

I alluded to the fact that I wouldn’t recommend getting your suit tailored if you’re not in the shape you want to be in right now. The flipside is being in shape and using your tailored suit to keep you in shape. Your suit fits like a dream. It would be a shame if you didn’t stay in shape and let that investment go to waste.
